Turning Trash into Treasure: Plastic Palit Bigas Clean-Up Drive

June 15, 2024, was an unforgettable day for the Saving Daigdig Project (SDP) and the lively community of Sitio Balanoy in Brgy. San Teodoro, Mabini, Batangas. With the stunning Verde Island Passage in the background, known for its rich biodiversity, we joined the "Plastic Palit Bigas" Program.

The goal? Clean up the shores of Mabini and encourage community spirit by exchanging plastic waste for rice.

Our mission was clear but challenging: Collect 100 sacks of trash from the shoreline. With the help from dedicated community members and volunteers, including Sir Giulio Endaya, we got to work. Every piece of plastic picked up meant a cleaner environment and more rice for the community—a true example of teamwork making a difference.

We had all the necessary cleaning materials, we also included caps, shirts, and stylish sunglasses to keep us prepared. The day wasn’t just about picking up trash; it was about coming together with a common goal and making a real impact.

At dawn, the beach came alive with activity. Volunteers of all ages worked side by side, filling sack after sack with plastic waste. Laughter and conversations mixed with the sound of waves, creating a lively and hopeful atmosphere. Seeing the full sacks lined up along the shore was a powerful reminder of what we could achieve together.

As the sun rose higher and the day got hotter, our determination only grew stronger. We made sure everyone stayed energized and hydrated, and the promise of a traditional boodle- fight meal kept our spirits high. This feast, enjoyed after hours of hard work, was more than just a meal—it was a celebration of our achievement and a reminder of our strong community bonds.

The transformation of the beach was incredible. What started as a littered shore turned back into a beautiful, natural beach, ready for locals and wildlife to enjoy. The collected sacks of plastic stood as proof of our hard work and the success of the "Plastic Palit Bigas" Program.

As we wrapped up and looked back on the day, we felt a deep sense of accomplishment. The beach was cleaner, the community was stronger, and the spirit of bayanihan was alive and well. Locals, with rice in hand, expressed their gratitude and shared their hopes for a cleaner future, reflecting the day's positive impact.

The "Plastic Palit Bigas" program represents what Saving Daigdig is all about: meaningful action, community support, and a strong dedication to protecting our environment. Together, we made a difference, and together, we will keep working to protect and cherish our beautiful planet. Join us as #EarthProtectors, and let's turn every day into an opportunity for positive change.
